Here’s some info from old Gibson Catalogs and Brochures (thanks to vintageguitarandbass.com):

“It’s easy to talk about the future of sound and electronics. But Gibson decided to do more than just talk. They decided to act! Gibson got together with “Mr Guitar”, Les Paul. Together, they designed a guitar that would bring the sounds of the future back to now. The result? The new Gibson Les Paul Recording Guitar ….with low impedance pickups. [This] guitar offer[s] you more sounds than ever before possible on any one instrument. Adaptable sounds that lend themselves to any one of the many contemporary music forms of today. Yet, these sounds are so futuristic, no one has come up with adjectives to describe them.

We were going to tell you about unbelievable tonalities and the vastness of its harmonic range.

We also thought about describing the frequency range that makes other guitars and basses take a back seat. But we soon discovered that no words could do justice to those magnificent instruments.

So we returned to the only medium that can accurately convey the electronic genius of the Les Paul Recording Guitar..... SOUND . the actual sounds of the future recorded for the musician who is tired of sounding like today. Spin this record right now and savor tomorrow.”

“To produce a truly fine instrument like the new Les Paul Recording guitar, you need more than just fine materials. You need expert innovators, skilled craftsmen and knowledgeable engineers who know acoustics and electronics inside and out.

You also need a man who is an expert in the guitar field to advise and recommend features and specifications that will cause the finished product to be unique and distinctive.

Gibson long recognized as the world’s leading guitar manufacturer, met these requirements when they combined their talents with the knowledgeable recommendations of a man who has come to be known to millions of music lovers as “Mr. Guitar”....Les Paul.

The intercommunication and exchange of ideas between Gibson’s engineers and the ingenious Les Paul brought about the birth of the revolutionary electric guitar on the market….. The Les Paul Recording guitar by Gibson.

Low Impedance Pickups The Les Paul Recording is the only guitar on the market with two humbucking, low impedance pickups. These pickups offer a new concept in tonal response. The pickup height, in relation to the strings, has been carefully adjusted to produce maximum performance. Maintain the factory adjusted string setting for best results. The frequency response, tonalities and range of harmonics will exceed that of any electric guitar on the market to date.”
    Features and Specifications

  • TONE SELECTOR SWITCH For additional tonal effects the selector switch offers unlimited possibilities. This three way switch enables the guitarist to pre-set a desired effect and change quickly from one sound to another with simplicity.

  • PHASE SWITCH This two position slide switch offers both "in phase" and "out phase" tonalities. An exciting new sound can easily be achieved by moving the switch to "out phase" position. The two pickups will produce opposing signals resulting in an exciting new musical adventure.

  • INDIVIDUAL BASS AND TREBLE CONTROLS A unique feature in the L.P. Recording is the complete separation between the bass and treble controls. Each frequency response pattern can be individually controlled to offer a perfect tonal blend. This feature is not found in any other professional type instrument.

  • SOLID BODY DESIGN The size, weight and density of the body are significant factors in the overall response of the L.P. Recording guitar. The solid Mahogany body contributes greatly to the outstanding sustaining characteristics and perfectly balanced tone throughout the entire playing register. The unique size and body style offer extreme comfort in any playing position.

  • PICKUP SELECTOR TOGGLE SWITCH This switch activates either the front or rear pickup, separately or simultaneously.

  • LOW IMPEDANCE HUMBUCKING PICKUPS Low impedance simply refers to the number of ohms employed in the use of an electronic product. An ohm is a unit measurement of electrical resistance. Low impedance is widely used in the broadcasting and recording industries due to the limited resistance which ultimately creates a much more responsive and "tuneable" signal. Less noise and extraneous hum are quality features. Another important feature of low impedance electronics is the outstanding treble frequency response. The fundamental and harmonic structures are extremely clear and undistorted.

  • DECADE CONTROL SWITCH The 11 position decade control "tunes" or alters the treble harmonic structure. Position 0 will "peak" the highest frequency. This "peaking" graduates accordingly down the frequency spectrum in steps through position 10.

  • MASTER VOLUME CONTROL This individual volume control enables the guitarist to increase the output level of either the front pickup or rear pickup with simplicity. The volume output of each pickup is increased with an extremely even balance between treble and bass frequencies.

  • IMPEDANCE SWITCH The Les Paul Recording is equipped with a unique switch that enables the guitarist to use either a "high" or "low" impedance amplifier without the use of a special transformer cable. In most cases commercial guitar amplification systems are high impedance. The impedance switch would then be set in the "Hi" position to obtain the versatile tonalities that are available without power loss.
